WHAT IS PERIODIC TESTING?

Periodic electrical testing, otherwise known as domestic EICR testing or an Electrical Inspection Condition Report (EICR), is a comprehensive inspection of your home’s electrical systems and installation.

Homeowners do not need to conduct a periodic electrical test by law, although it can be required when purchasing or selling your home. Businesses and landlords are required by law to undertake periodic electrical testing. It’s important to check your electrics regularly in the same way that you would take your car to have its MOT.

A periodic test will pick up any problems or faults in your electrics, which wouldn’t normally be picked up by eye. The faults, if not picked up, could lead to dangerous and hazardous situations, such as a fire, or a nasty shock from your electrics.

We can also provide a regular check of all your electrics, including sockets, lights and cables to make sure they are up to safety standards.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TEST MY ELECTRICS?

Electrical testing should take place on a regular basis. Like most things in life, it has a shelf life and it’s always better to be on the safe side. British Standard BS 76719 (IET Wiring Regulations) advises that homeowners, landlords and businesses test as follows:

Electrical tests for homeowners are required every ten years or every year if there is a spa or swimming pool on your property, then the British Standard BS 76719 would advise to test every year.

Electrical tests for businesses should be taken every five years.

Electrical tests for landlord properties should take place at a change of tenancy or every five years.

EICR CERTIFICATE OF SAFETY

A EICR Certificate of Safety will be given to you once your property, home or business premises has passed all inspections and work is complete, giving you reassurance that your property electrics are safe.
