What is the difference between a fuse box and a consumer unit?
They essentially do the same thing. Both distribute electricity around your home, property or business, through multiple circuits and immediately switch the power off whenever a power overload occurs on a circuit. This is known as ‘tripping’.
When ‘tripping’ occurs, the power will be switched off by the consumer unit using the circuit breaker linked to the overloaded circuit. You can then determine the faulty circuit because the consumer unit or mains board will flick the faulty circuit to the off position. The power can be turned back on once the fault is fixed.
A consumer unit uses circuit breakers, and on the other hand, a fuse box uses fuses. Each fuse contains a wire. This wire will melt if there is an electrical overload. The power will then be switched off.
It is not an easy task trying to identify a faulty circuit when using a fuse box. Fuse boxes in most cases are no longer what the UK regulations would deem compliant. Consumer units are safer and now replace these fuse boxes.
Our fully qualified electricians are able to help with any fuse box or consumer unit faults or replacements. It so important to use a trained electrician, rather than attempt to do this yourself.
